The Carnation Revolution started on 25th April 1974 and was a peaceful military led coup d'etat that changed the Portuguese regime from a dictatorship to a democracy.
A group of young officers formed within the Movimento das Forças Armadas (The Movement of the Armed Forces) led the coup and within a few hours Lisbon was completely occupied by troops loyal to the MFA. The revolutionaries did not use violence and the population holding red carnations convinced the regime soldiers not to resist and the soldiers swapped their bullets for flowers - hence the name the Carnation Revolution.
The day is celebrated all over Portugal and here in Faro, amongst other celebrations, there are fireworks in the São Francisco car park at midnight.
